Jaclyn Smith, Moritz Fassbender of Timaru spent five months at Ronald McDonald House South Island in 2013 following the three-month premature birth of their son Luca.
“And it meant Moritz didn’t have to worry about going back to work for a good few weeks so we got to spend precious time together as a family.”
For a bit of added support Jaclyn’s mum Noeline came to stay at the House too and Moritz’s parents event visited from Germany. They all became very familiar faces around the House, and although their ultimate goal was to get Luca home, they appreciated having somewhere that offered them a bit of respite while Luca was growing and being treated.
“Ronald McDonald House South Island means so much to us,” says Jaclyn.
“The support we received was overwhelming and we were very well looked after during our time there. Being with the staff and other families going through situations with their child really helped us gain strength. And we have made friends for life!
“We had such a long emotional roller coaster journey and we appreciate everything they did for us while we were going through a really stressful time. It’s is more than a house, it is a home away from home. And now that we are home, we love going back to visit with our precious Luca when we have Hospital check ups!”
