Volunteer Spotlight

The Three Musketeers

Every Wednesday for the last five years, our Christchurch facility has welcomed volunteer house handymen David, Gus and Neil – or as they’re more commonly known, ‘The Three Musketeers’.

The Musketeers’ drive to volunteer came after they bid farewell to education careers spanning more than 40 years. The lines are blurred around exactly who recruited who to help out, but they are all in agreement when it comes to why: “We quickly realised that Ronald McDonald House South Island is a worthy cause and provides a very important service,” says David.

Everything from changing lightbulbs to tidying up the garden is taken care of every Wednesday without fail. It is always done with a smile and a cheeky joke.

Gus says the friends look forward to Wednesdays and the variety of jobs they do around the House.

“I find it rewarding to work together, contributing in a very small way to the welfare of others,” he says.

David, Gus and Neil are key members of the Ronald McDonald House South Island team and always go above and beyond to ensure the wheels keep turning.

“We feel that we are valued members of the team, and we know that our efforts are appreciated,” says David – and how right he is.

The Musketeers brighten everyone’s day, and we are extremely grateful to have them.

“It has been fascinating to learn the role that this charity plays in the communities of the South Island.”
